The road infrastructure in our car dependent towns and communities will become unsustainable once the roads reach the end of their design life (around 30 years). The tax base that supports infrastructure will decline or plateau in proportion to the size of the economy and the declining working age population rate.

Even today, the majority of car trips are less than 5 minutes - or three kilometres in urban areas. With a larger proportion of these these trips undertaken on foot or bicycle - the need for car infrastructure would decrease.

The cost per kilometre for safe bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure is about one tenth of that for car road infrastructure.
